Once you fill the crack, you can never go back

The addition struck over 15 years ago.  My father looked up at the ceiling of a neighbor's recently remodeled Eichler and thought it looked different somehow.

AFTER:

Now we caulk every ceiling when it's being repainted.  Just a wet finger and some caulking is all that's required (and a strong neck).

You may never look at the your tongue and groove ceiling the same way again.   Sorry!

  1. could there be any problems with the caulked grooves
flaking or chipping out on you later? like during a foam roof addition down the line? I would like to do this, but am worried about how long the caulking will hold, if it starts to fall out... what a mess.
    how are they holding up?

  2. So far so good after 10 years.

And while we haven't had a lot of heavy traffic up on the roof, we did use good quality caulking and of course let it set at least overnight before applying paint over it.

  3. I used bigstretch caulk and that worked well as dar as flexibility with roofers on top working. Beware : caulkibgbhas preservatives that can hurt yoir skin, weqr thin gloves with cotton liner gloves inside them when working

  4. And i will nowb add: caulked ceilings are holding up fine to roofing job .the junk doesn't fall through while they are messing around with old tar gravel above the ceilings where we've caulked previously -major bonus . Totally worth it. Be forewarned : if ypu caulk all ceilings before they redo an older leaking roof; the caulk may obscure where the original leak or roof problem is coming from -and water may wind all over the place above while it seeks an outlet So, dont caulk under a leaky roof unles you plan to reroof soon.

  5. After a recent termite infestation, I now wish I had caulked all the outside grooves as well. The large gaps are an inviting entry point for dry wood termites when they are swarming and flying around outside...
